Poland Betting On Gambling

A number of media reports are circulating suggesting that Poland is getting ready to legalise, regulate and - of course - tax online gambling operators in the not-too-distant future. The move comes as a breath of fresh air, particularly among the multitudes of Polish gambling enthusiasts and those firms operating online poker rooms, casino and bingo sites, as well as websites accepting sports bets.

The same reports indicate that the former communist country is set to free up its online gaming market beginning as early as this coming July.

Poland's Deputy Minister of Finance, Marek Kapica, recently stated that the country is prepared to permit online gambling even prior to amending its current laws. These eventual legislative changes would then be forwarded to the European Commission in accordance with ‘the required notification procedure.'

Admitted Kapica, "We can not control this [current gambling] process anyway and it is better that the budget at least derives some revenues from it.'

According to a number of Polish media sources, the government is trying to imitate the Italian government's now relaxed regulations overseeing online gambling. Last March, the European Court of Justice ruled in favour of the defendant, in what was known as the Placanica case.

The Italian lawsuit involved a Mr. Massimiliano Placanica and was later referred to the European Court of Justice. The question brought before the ECJ basically dealt with whether or not Italian laws governing online gambling were compatible with the European Economic Community's treaty regarding the free trade of goods and services among the various EEC members.
