Poker Players Alliance Dealing with Deval

A protest rally was held in front of the Massachusetts State House today by online poker players against a bill introduced by State Governor Deval Patrick. The legislation renders poker playing over the Internet with other grown ups a crime punishable by, among other things, prison time.

The demonstration was organised by the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), the largest poker advocacy group in the United States. According to the PPA, their membership now boasts nearly a million online as well as offline poker defenders located across America.

The rally was timed to take place just before a hearing with the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies focusing on the Massachusetts Casino Expansion Bill.

Randy Castonguay, the PPA's Massachusetts State Director, was quoted as saying, "In the case of the online poker ban in the Governor's casino bill, making criminals out of adults who choose this form of skilled recreation makes no sense."

The northeastern State's online poker criminalisation code renders playing poker over the Net from one's own home unlawful and punishable by a two-year jail sentence and/or a 25,000-dollar fine.

Castonguay continued with, "We urge members of the committee and the state legislature to recognise the unfairness of this provision and remove it from the bill in order to protect the rights of thousands of their constituents to enjoy this game of skill - whether online or at a card table."
