What Association?

A quick search for information about the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) turned up a lot more than just this particular politically active group. Most people who play poker on regular basis and follow the professional game closely know that the PPA has been leading the charge in the federal-regulation battle. While this recently formed organization may be the most recognized among poker groups there have been a number of attempts to organize players in the last few years.
For instance, there is an American Poker Association at www.americanpokerassociation.biz that set a goal of establishing a tour similar to the professional golf tour. While the forum/discussion section of this site goes back a couple of years, the entries seem to have stopped in April 2009.
The On Line Poker Players Association established a site in 2005-2006 (www.olppa.org). There is an International Poker Players Association, as well as a Southern California Poker Players Association. If you’re from the Lone Star State you may want to check into the current status of the Texas Card Players Association. If you are from the land down under, you could turn to the Canberra Poker Players Association for networking and other activities.
The list goes on and on. What is the status of these various groups? How do they contribute to the game of poker?
