Staying Safe Online

In addition to testifying at a Congressional hearing on gambling law in December, Parry Aftab of WiredSafety participated in an Internet Safety Technical Task Force that recently released a report on industry safety. This particular report focused on keeping young people safe and making sure underage children can’t access certain social networks. The focus was on keeping the very young safe from “Internet sexual predators and sexual exploitation.”
According to information from Aftab and WiredSafety, technology is an important tool in keeping the online world safe. The task force’s work is led by the Attorney Generals from two U.S. states, Connecticut and North Carolina. Copies of the report have been distributed to Attorney General offices in every state. Aftab writes, “It is hoped that this is the beginning, not the end, of the process.”
Apparently the White House and the Federal Trade Commission are showing interest in the work of the task force. “for the first time, the U.S. states and federal government are focusing their efforts on pulling together industry, advocates and policymakers to address cyberrisks and solutions.”
Aftab is an attorney “specializing in Internet privacy and security law.” She testified for Rep. Barney Frank’s hearing on his new Internet gambling law, along with Jim Dowling of Dowling Advisory Group, “a nationally recognized regulatory consulting and investigate firm.” Dowling has expertise in money laundering and financial investigative services.
